Popeye Village- Malta

Popeye Village, Malta also goes by the name of Sweethaven Village. Popeye Village is a group of ramshackle buildings located at Anchor Bay in the North West corner of the Island of Malta. Popeye Village is just two miles from Mellieha Bay where we are staying so we couldn’t resist but pay this somewhat surreal little place a visit.popeye village maltapopeye village-malta-travel thefabuloustimes Popeye Village was originally created as a film set for the 1980’s musical feature film of Popeye starring Robyn Williams, produced by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney. Today Popeye Village is open to the public as an attraction with Disneyland style Popeye and Oilve Oyl entertainers ready to burst into song/ dance at any minute, a small cartoon museum, boat rides around the bay and eateries to look out over the view.popeye village malta travelpopeye villagePopeye Village is life size and spans across the entire side of the bay. Upon closer inspection the crooked ramshackle houses have been perfectly positioned and engineered with not a straight edge in sight. Popeye Village opened my eyes to the extent that filmmakers go to in creating a feature film, pretty incredible really.popeye village travel maltaThe view of Popeye Village from the headland at the opposite side of Anchor Bay was an impressive sight. Looking across at the colourful higgledy-piggeldy shacks with the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean sea really was an awe-worthy vista. Also, there’s a pretty large Nature Reserve over the opposite side of the bay to Popeye Village so you could plan in a walk if you want to see some of Malta’s glorious rugged coastline.thefabuloustimes-malta-travelI’d recommend a trip to Popeye Village for any of you die hard Popeye fans, families with young children, or any of you that just want to visit somewhere completely surreal. (Entry to Popeye Village, Adults 10 Euro)
